Iran, formerly called Persia, is known for artistic achievement in the weaving of Oriental carpets. The history of the weaving of these carpets stretches back many years. The Safavid Dynasty (1502-736) saw the development of carpet factories in several centers such as Kerman, Isfahan, Kashan, Tabriz, and Herat. These cities lent their names to the well-known carpet patterns, motifs, and designs still valued and sold throughout the world. Persian rug patterns are generally named after the village or area where they were woven or after the tribe that made them if nomads wove them.
Each rug's particular pattern, dyes and typical colors, and characteristic weaving techniques are specific to an identifiable geographic area or nomadic tribe. Most of the patterns and designs seen in today’s Oriental rugs originated in Iran, even in many of the rugs now woven in other parts of the world.
Persian carpets compliment any décor and bring warmth and beauty to homes throughout the world. They are treasured possessions and heirlooms that are handed down from one generation to the next, preserving their story and artistry through the years.
For over 2500 years, oriental rugs have been used in the east by nomads and villages for warmth and beauty. More recently in the west, they have graced their homes with their art and luxury, and go with any decor. An oriental rug is a purchase for a lifetime and when properly maintained, for generations.
